A completely confusing, mind-numbing and humbling experience... trying to help Alex with her math homework. Give me spelling, reading, writing, heck, even give me gym... but not math! I changed majors twice in college to avoid entry-level math classes. But I know my multiplication chart, so I figured I can help her. I couldn't have been more wrong. I can't even begin to explain how they do it now, not like we used to. We used to multiply from right to left, now they do it from LEFT to RIGHT. And then I got in trouble from the teacher for confusing her by showing her my old way! Then we moved on to decimals. They don't even use numbers for that one, they use cubes, dots and slashes - huh?! The teachers don't even send home instruction manuals for the parents, or offer parent-helping-classes. So again, evenings end in tears, frustration and hair pulling. And that's just me.
