I have a dream...

Sam came home from school the other day, anxious to tell me what he learned. "We learned about Marfa Loofer King," he said. Here's how our conversation went:

Sam: There was this girl on a bus, and you know, she had to move when a white man told her to. And she didn't, and they took her to jail.

Mom: Her name was Rosa Parks

Sam: How'd you know that?

Mom: Tell me what else you learned about that.

Sam: Marfa Loofer King tried to talk about freedoms and how everyone should be treated fair. He talked about his dream and got shot. Mom, I'm never telling anyone about my dreams, I don't want to get shot.

Mom: Sam, he didn't get shot for telling about his dreams, he got shot because he tried to make things equal and some people didn't like that. They thought white people were better than black people, Mexican people, Chinese people or anyone else.

Sam: Mom, the fight was only about black and white people. Chinese people weren't in this fight.

At least he seems eager to learn. I should be thankful for that!
